Footpaths were made for walking
Footpaths were made for walking
From Neraca
Pleasant walks on Jakarta sidewalks are a dream to all the
capital's pedestrians. Not to mention the kind of stroll
pedestrians along Singapore's Orchard Road enjoy. That is some
dream, really.
When will our sidewalks be really made available to
pedestrians? Maybe this question sounds like a much repeated
complaint that so far, quite frankly, has not been heeded by the
authorities. The fact is that sidewalks are still being used by
vendors.
And they are not the only offenders. Motorcyclists use
sidewalks as shortcuts during peak hours to get ahead of cars at
traffic lights. Is it any wonder sidewalks have become unusable
in a relatively short time?
Meanwhile, vendors trade their wares without a qualm on most
of the capital's sidewalks. Nearly all sidewalks in the capital
are used by vendors.
When will this problem be given serious attention? Pedestrians
have more right to the sidewalks.
I hope the government takes more notice and does something
about it.
