Food outlets spotted by Mr. Cardamom content creator in New York
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, known as the YouTube content creator Mr. Cardamom, once checked out six modest eateries in densely populated neighbourhoods across the United States. ‘There are so many moments in my life that I cannot separate from food,’ Mamdani told The New York Times, as cited by Mashed on Sunday.
Here are some places he frequents:
- Kabab King, Jackson Heights
Mamdani has been a loyal customer of the Pakistani restaurant since his high school days. The restaurant’s staples, he says, include biryani and paan (a type of dessert).
Kabab King’s menu features traditional foods from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India such as tandoori dishes, curries, and even kebab rolls reminiscent of those in Mr. Cardamom’s music video. The interior design is modern with bright pink hues that have drawn attention even before Mamdani visited. The Dominican Republic bakery shop is noted as the location where Mamdani signed an executive order to help small businesses. The recommended dish there is tres leches cake.
- Pye Boat Noodle, Astoria
While living in Queens, Mamdani frequently ordered from the Thai street stall. The stall serves his favourite goi neur (fresh beef salad). It also has an open-air rear dining area suitable for relaxing.
For vegan enthusiasts, Urban Vegan Roots is the go-to. The eatery offers a range of innovative vegan dishes that comply with certain religious dietary laws. Its menu includes plant-based chicken wings with Korean barbecue sauce, seitan scaloppine (slices of wheat gluten) to vegan chicken and waffles. The site is recorded as the first place Mamdani planned his 2024 mayoral campaign.
- Laliguras Bistro, Jackson Heights
Mamdani’s love for Central Asian cuisine led him to Laliguras Bistro. The Nepalese restaurant was the scene of his lunch meeting with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The order at that time was chicken chili.
- New York Halal Cart
Besides eateries, Mamdani has also looked at halal food carts around New York City in one of his videos. However, he has not spoken about a specific halal cart vendor to endorse. Mashed reports that one item served at the cart is chicken rice.
