Food first at Tanjung Priok

JAKARTA (JP): In the lead-up to Christmas, New Year and Idul
Fitri, the Tanjung Priok Port management is giving berthing
priority to vessels carrying basic staple goods and foods such as
rice, sugar and soybeans, an official said yesterday.

Sudjarwo, spokesperson for the Tanjung Priok office of the
state-owned port managing company PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II, said
that the new regulation was made to anticipate a rising number of
vessels berthing at the port during the festive seasons.

"The port has prepared Piers No. 101, 113, 114, 115, 202, 203,
212, 312, 214 and 213 for the unloading of basic commodities,"
Sudjarwo was quoted by Antara as saying.

Vessels transporting livestock should use the facilities at
Piers No. 115, 203, 208 and 213, he said.

Piers 106 and 107 are exclusively reserved for passengers, he
said.

The new procedures are intended to expedite the flow of both
goods and passengers.

He explained that the port has prepared a 2,400-square meter
building with the capacity to accommodate about 1,000 waiting
travelers to anticipate a surge in the number of travelers.

"If the building cannot accommodate all the travelers during
the peak season, waiting-room space can be enlarged by erecting
tents in the passenger terminal yard," he said. (hhr)
