Following Two-Hour Meeting with Prabowo, BI Governor Expresses Confidence in Rupiah Stability
President Prabowo Subianto held an economic meeting with several ministers and the Governor of Bank Indonesia, Perry Warjiyo, at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday (18/05/2026). The two-hour session focused on the current state of the Indonesian economy, specifically addressing the rupiah exchange rate.
When questioned by reporters at the palace regarding the rupiah, Governor Perry Warjiyo provided a brief but reassuring response, stating, “Confident it is stable,” before departing.
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa revealed plans for his department to activate a Bond Stabilisation Fund (BSF) to assist in stabilising the rupiah against the US dollar. This intervention will target the bond market to maintain competitive yields. The strategy involves using BSF funds to purchase Indonesian Government Securities (SBN) that have been sold by foreign investors. This policy is intended to be implemented without the need for additional coordination with Bank Indonesia or the OJK within the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK) forum, initially relying on state cash reserves.
According to Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, the budget allocation prepared to run this scheme is approximately Rp 2 trillion per day. He noted that the State Budget (APBN) still has sufficient room for cash management to support this allocation, and emphasised that the government’s invested funds would not incur losses.
Meanwhile, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, confirmed that a policy package is being prepared. He noted that the discussions with the President are still in the refinement stage and have not yet been officially announced.
