Following Trump Policy, Google Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America

Google has changed the name of ‘Lake Ontario’ to ‘Lake America’ on its digital mapping services within the United States. This move follows instructions from US President Donald Trump to rename the body of water amid rising trade tensions with Canada.

In a statement on Saturday (29/08/2026), the tech giant stated that the lake’s name will be updated for users in the US, but will continue to be displayed as Lake Ontario in Canada. Meanwhile, users outside of the US and Canada will see both names.

Google explained that this decision reflects changes made by the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). “This update follows our long-term policy for water bodies that have different names in each country, and the process is beginning to roll out now,” the company added, as quoted from Al Jazeera.

Users in the US began reporting the name update on Sunday. Google implemented a similar policy when Trump unilaterally renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’ last year.

On the other hand, Apple Maps—which previously complied with Trump’s renaming of the Gulf of Mexico—was still displaying the waters as Lake Ontario for users in the US as of Sunday.

The Trump administration officially renamed the lake, which lies between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York in the US, on Thursday as a form of insult to Canada.
