West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has stated that he will send nine students from SMAN 1 Purwakarta to a military barracks following the viral social media case of bullying against a teacher.

The decision was announced during his visit to the school in Purwakarta on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, as part of efforts to rehabilitate the students.

“They must be guided, turning bad behaviour into good,” said Dedi, quoted from his personal YouTube channel.

Previously, the nine students were slated for suspension. However, the school cancelled that policy and replaced it with social punishment in the form of community service within the school environment.

The students are now required to clean school facilities, including toilets, every day for three months. In addition, they receive guidance from counselling teachers as part of the behavioural improvement process.

During his visit, Dedi Mulyadi directly observed the students’ rehabilitation activities. Eight students were seen participating in Quranic recitation, while one other student read a scripture according to their faith. Dedi welcomed this condition positively.

According to the counselling teacher, the nine involved students consist of three males and six females from family backgrounds assessed as having no issues, either psychologically or economically. Most parents of the students are said to support the school’s rehabilitation measures.

The counselling teacher stated that the rehabilitation began on Monday, 20 April 2026, starting with cleaning activities and followed by religious programmes. The students’ parents are said to accept this rehabilitation.

Nevertheless, the students experienced shock and stress after the case went viral. However, according to the school, their condition is now improving and they are able to undergo the rehabilitation process.

As a follow-up step, Dedi Mulyadi stated that the nine students will participate in a military barracks rehabilitation programme in June 2026. The programme is planned to take place at the Marine Corps headquarters in Jakarta and will be joined by the current OSIS committee.

“In June, they will join the military barracks programme, together with the current OSIS chair,” said Dedi Mulyadi.
