Following Online Gambling Raid, Jakarta Provincial Government Urged to Monitor Offices with High Internet Traffic
Jakarta DPRD Commission A member from the PKS faction, Ahmad Yani, has urged the Jakarta Provincial Government to tighten surveillance on offices or companies exhibiting suspicious activities, including high internet traffic usage.
This call comes in the wake of police raiding an international online gambling (judol) headquarters in an office building in the Hayam Wuruk area, West Jakarta.
Yani believes the incident highlights the need to strengthen oversight of activities in office buildings.
Yani explained that the provincial government should monitor several indicators, including offices operating 24 hours with secretive activities and a high volume of foreign workers entering and exiting certain buildings.
“Large numbers of foreign workers coming and going, yet the business activities are not publicly clear,” he said.
He assessed that surveillance cannot be carried out by one party alone. According to Yani, collaboration among various agencies is necessary to detect illegal activities more quickly.
The agencies to be involved include the Investment and One-Stop Integrated Services Agency (DPMPTSP), the Population and Civil Registration Agency (Disdukcapil), Immigration, the Manpower, Transmigration, and Energy Agency of DKI, up to reports from the community, namely neighbourhood units (RT), community units (RW), and sub-districts.
“So when there is a company with certain permits but its operational practices are suspicious, field inspections can be conducted immediately,” he said.
In addition, the Jakarta Provincial Government is advised to form an integrated surveillance team with law enforcement agencies and building managers.
Building managers are also urged to be more proactive in reporting unusual activities in their environments.
In the digital era, Ahmad Yani also emphasised the importance of monitoring cyber activities or cyber monitoring.
The government can collaborate with the Ministry of Communication and Informatics as well as law enforcement agencies to monitor patterns of internet traffic, servers, and suspicious digital transactions.
Regarding the case in the Hayam Wuruk area, Ahmad Yani described it as an important note for oversight in Jakarta.
