Following Food Poisoning Incident in Sidoarjo, East Java Provincial Government to Summon All SPPG Managers
The East Java Provincial Government is taking decisive action following a food poisoning incident involving students (santri) caused by the consumption of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) menu. The Regional Secretary of East Java, Adhy Karyono, has confirmed that the provincial government will convene all managers of the Nutrition Fulfilment Service Units (SPPG) across the East Java region.
“As a government, when this occurs repeatedly, we are naturally very concerned. Although internal supervision of the Hygiene and Sanitation Feasibility Certificate (SLHS) has been conducted, there are still factors beyond our direct control that have resulted in fatal consequences,” stated Adhy Karyono, as quoted from the official East Java provincial website on Thursday, 3 September 2026.
Adhy explained that the East Java MBG Task Force, led by the Deputy Governor of East Java, Emil Dardak, alongside a team of experts, has held a consolidation meeting. The Task Force has investigated the case and officially reported it to the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) for further action.
An investigation is currently underway to identify the precise primary cause of the poisoning. Adhy emphasised that the East Java Provincial Government will no longer tolerate any negligence in the kitchen operations of food providers within the MBX programme.
“The first step following this consolidation is to summon all SPPG kitchen managers. We want to re-verify whether the regulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for food processing are being fully complied with,” he asserted.
Moving forward, the East Java Provincial Government will not rely solely on imposing sanctions after incidents occur, but will instead tighten supervision through periodic inspections of SPPG kitchen conditions. This is to ensure that all stages of food processing meet safety and health standards. The provincial government hopes that strengthened supervision and compliance with SOPs will prevent similar cases and ensure the MBG programme operates safely and provides optimal benefits to the community.
As previously reported, the latest MBG menu poisoning case occurred at the Mambaul Hikam Islamic Boarding School in Tanggulangin, Sidoarjo. Hundreds of students from the boarding school and surrounding educational institutions experienced nausea, vomiting, and dizziness after consuming food from the Kalitengah Sidoarjo SPPG, leading them to be rushed to several hospitals and health facilities in Sidoarjo for medical treatment.
