Following Fatal Clash in Menteng, John Kei Urges Public to Exercise Restraint
Amidst the legal proceedings following a fatal clash in the Jalan Tambak area of Menteng, Central Jakarta, the Chairman of the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Kei Youth Force (DPP AMKEI), John Kei, has called upon the public, particularly citizens from Eastern Indonesia, to remain calm and trust the police with the handling of the case.
This message was delivered through the Daily Chairman of DPP AMKEI, Abubakar Refra, during a visit to the Metro Jaya Regional Police on Thursday, 30 July 2026. In addition to requesting that the police thoroughly investigate the case, which resulted in one fatality, AMKEI emphasised its commitment to maintaining a conducive situation.
“We also urge all people from Eastern Indonesia to exercise restraint, maintain order, and refrain from taking the law into their own hands,” Abubakar told reporters on Friday, 31 July 2026.
Abubakar stated that AMKEI is fully entrusting the handling of the case to investigators and is prepared to support the legal process should any parties linked to the organisation be found involved.
“AMKEI Indonesia is ready to be cooperative if, during the legal process, any involvement of members or parties related to the organisation is discovered,” he said.
Furthermore, AMKEI requested that the public avoid exacerbating the situation by spreading unverified information or content that could trigger inter-group conflict.
“We urge the entire community not to spread unverified information, provocations, hate speech, or content that could incite conflict between groups,” he added.
Abubakar further noted that John Kei reaffirmed that his organisation remains committed to maintaining national unity and security stability.
“The Chairman of DPP AMKEI Indonesia, John Kei, emphasised that AMKEI Indonesia is committed to maintaining the unity, peace, national stability, and the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia,” he said.
It was previously reported that the police are continuing their investigation into the bloody clash on Jalan Tambak, Menteng, which left a young man dead. Preliminary investigation results reveal that the disturbance, which ended in death, began over an issue regarding noisy exhausts and escalated into vandalism and a mob attack. In the course of the investigation, the Metro Jaya Regional Police have named seven individuals as suspects. They are being processed under two separate cases: the destruction of a vendor’s cart and the mob attack that led to the fatality.
