Following Bekasi KRL Accident, AHY Reveals 76 Level Crossings in Need of Improvement

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) has revealed that there are 76 level crossings in Java and Sumatra that require improvements.

This was conveyed to President Prabowo Subianto during a report on developments and tactical steps following the accident between a KRL commuter train and the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek at Bekasi Timur Station some time ago.

“Among them, after our identification, there are approximately 76 level crossings in the Java region and parts of Sumatra that indeed need immediate construction, whether it be railway gates, flyovers, or underpasses,” said AHY at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (12/5/2026).

“We also want to continue improving the signalling system and modernising other railway systems,” said the Chairman General of the Democrat Party.

Safety, according to AHY, is a special focus in the overhaul of public transportation in Indonesia.

“The spirit is that for public transportation, we prioritise safety and ultimately inter-regional connectivity can also bring growth and other economic opportunities,” said AHY.

From the figures, there are 2,803 registered crossings and 1,093 unregistered crossings. Additionally, 1,832 crossings are guarded, while 971 are not.

Meanwhile, in early 2025, the number of level crossings decreased to 3,703 points, comprising 2,776 registered crossings and 927 unregistered ones.

Then in December 2025, 1,864 level crossings were recorded as guarded, while 912 points have no guards.

The head of state emphasised that the government will carry out a major overhaul of level crossings and make it one of the priority tasks.

“In general, we note that many of these railway crossings are unguarded. Then in Java, there are 1,800 points that are also like this,” said Prabowo while visiting victims at RSUD dr. Chasbullah Abdulmadjid in Bekasi City on Tuesday (28/4/2026).

He also acknowledged that the issue of level crossings is an old problem that has been ongoing for decades and must be resolved immediately.

The government is also preparing a budget of around Rp 4 trillion to accelerate the handling of level crossings in various regions.

“For safety and because we really need railways, we must allocate it. Now is the time; it hasn’t been done for decades, so now we do it,” said Prabowo.
