Plans by the National Road Implementation Agency (BPJN) to construct a flyover or grade-separated crossing (STS) at the railway line intersection on Sudirman Road in Tangerang City, Banten, are deemed appropriate to prevent potential accidents caused by drivers running red lights at level crossings.

“We welcome this as a permanent solution to address accidents caused by drivers breaching railway barriers and other rule violations,” said Tangerang City DPRD member Apanudin on Sunday.

In February 2026, the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Train collided with a truck at the JPL 21 level crossing between Poris and Baticeper stations. The incident occurred as the truck became stuck on the tracks and the airport train was approaching at high speed.

Therefore, the Tangerang City DPRD has proposed that the flyover construction not only be carried out on Sudirman Road but also on Maulana Hasanuddin Road from Batuceper to Poris.

Apanudin said strategic flyover construction is crucial to address traffic congestion influenced by the Duri-Tangerang Commuter Line level crossings.

“Constructing flyovers at railway intersections is an urgent need given the high traffic density in the area,” he said.

He added that safety concerns, alongside traffic congestion, are critical factors in expediting the flyover construction in both areas due to frequent accidents at railway crossings.

“The DPRD fundamentally supports the city’s development policies, whether initiated by the provincial or central government. However, we stress that traffic studies must be thoroughly comprehensive,” he said.

“Therefore, the grade-separated crossings are a priority, not only for traffic flow but also for public safety,” he added.

Tangerang City Planning and Development Agency (Bappeda) chief Yeti Rohaeti said the planned flyover or STS on Sudirman Road would be 600 metres long, with an estimated budget of approximately Rp80 billion.

“The Tangerang City Government has proposed accelerating the project from the planned 2028 to 2027. Currently, several supporting documents are in the tendering and preparation process,” she said.

The documents being prepared include traffic engineering studies, detailed engineering design (DED), environmental impact assessment (AMDAL), and land acquisition processes.

“The local government aims to commence land acquisition once the DED is completed. If all documents are in order, physical construction is targeted to begin by mid-2027,” she said.
