Floods Sweep Sulawesi, Kalimantan and West Java! Thousands of Homes Flooded

Jakarta, VIVA - Heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has triggered floods across several areas in three provinces: Central Sulawesi, South Kalimantan, and West Java. Abdul Muhari, head of BNPB’s Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center (Pusdatinkom), said that floods resulting from river overflow due to the intense rainfall have inundated thousands of homes and public facilities, forcing some residents to evacuate. The BNPB Disaster Risk Management Command Centre (Pusdalops) reported that in Central Sulawesi, floods hit Desa Tuladenggi Pantai, Moutong District, Parigi Moutong Regency, on Monday, 18 May 2026. The disaster affected 66 residents and submerged 66 housing units, one health facility, one worship facility, and one public facility. Meanwhile, substantial flooding swept across South Kalimantan, spreading across two areas: Tapin Regency and Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency. In Tapin, 155 housing units in Desa Lawahan, Tapin Selatan District, were flood-damaged, affecting 589 people. In Hulu Sungai Tengah, floodwaters inundated three sub-districts, with damages including 2,489 homes, 12 worship facilities, 13 educational facilities, and 15 office facilities, with water levels ranging from 10 to 60 centimetres. Then in Java, floods hit Cirebon Regency, West Java, due to river overflows into residential areas across four sub-districts. A total of 1,363 housing units were flooded, affecting 5,139 people, with 30 residents evacuated to relatives’ homes.
