Floods recede in Bangladesh

CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh (AFP): Flood waters began to recede on Thursday after early monsoon rains wreaked havoc here, stranding 40,000 people and leaving a school headmaster dead, residents said.

There was no immediate police confirmation that the 48-year- old teacher had died late Wednesday in this southeastern port city.

He allegedly died when a small boat he and another teacher were using to cross a flooded road sank in Hathazari subdistrict, 40 kilometers south of here. The survivor later reported the death to the victim's family, residents said.

Several clay homes in the hills also collapsed during three days of nonstop rains, but there were no immediate reports of casualties, officials said earlier.
