Jakarta (ANTARA) - Residents’ settlements in Kebon Pala, Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta (Jaktim), were inundated by flooding on Monday morning, with water levels reaching approximately 125 centimetres (cm) or more than one metre.

“This evening at 22:04 WIB, now the water has reached around one metre, the water keeps rising, around 125 cm already,” said the Head of RT 13/RW 04 Kampung Melayu, Sanusi, when contacted in Jakarta on Monday.

The flooding was triggered by rainfall that occurred from noon until the afternoon. Water levels continued to rise, submerging residents’ homes in the low-lying area.

Sanusi noted that rain with fairly high intensity has frequently fallen almost every day in recent times, particularly in the afternoon to evening.

“The water started rising around 19:00 WIB. It seems because of the rain earlier. Indeed, it rains almost every day, usually in the afternoon, then Depok is on alert two,” explained Sanusi.

According to him, the flooding conditions in the Kebon Pala area have become a recurring event in recent days.

The ongoing rain pattern makes it difficult for water puddles to recede optimally, causing levels to rise again when heavy rain falls.

Although water levels reached one metre, residents are still holding out in their respective homes and no one has evacuated yet. Sanusi assured that the situation remains safe and under control.

“No one has evacuated yet, still holding out on the second floor, still safe,” said Sanusi.

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) DKI Jakarta recorded that there are 55 neighbourhood units (RT) in South Jakarta and West Jakarta that were flooded due to heavy rain hitting those areas.

From the available data, flooding submerged 51 RTs in South Jakarta and four RTs in West Jakarta; additionally, three road sections were also flooded.

Heavy rain that hit the DKI Jakarta area and surroundings on Monday (4/5) also caused a rise in water levels at the Pesanggrahan Post (Alert 3) at 16:00 WIB, Depok Post (Alert 3) at 17:00 WIB, Angke Hulu Post (Alert 3) at 17:00 WIB, and caused several puddles in the DKI Jakarta area.
