CILACAP, Central Java: Incessant rains on Saturday and Sunday have caused the Cibereum River and its six tributaries to overflow, inundating about 1,150 houses in six villages nearby.
Thousands of villagers fled to higher ground, while local military posts have been turned into temporary command posts for rescue workers.
Dozens of residents were hospitalized for various ailments brought about by the disaster, including diarrhea and respiratory problems.
Similar disasters have also occurred at various places across the country. In West Java, rains and landslides have disrupted railway traffic between Jakarta and Bandung.
In Yogyakarta, the local administration has issued warnings to residents along the Code River of possible floods, and for rescue workers to be on call, Antara reported.
In North Aceh, floods that hit three subdistricts since Sunday have now spread further, while floods in West Aceh have started to subside. However, 672 families of West Aceh are still camping out on higher ground.
Some of the areas stricken by floods were Lhoksukon, Tanah Pasir and Matang Kuli subdistricts. (swe/wah)
