Floods inundate many houses

CILACAP, Central Java: Incessant rains on Saturday and Sunday
have caused the Cibereum River and its six tributaries to
overflow, inundating about 1,150 houses in six villages nearby.

Thousands of villagers fled to higher ground, while local
military posts have been turned into temporary command posts for
rescue workers.

Dozens of residents were hospitalized for various ailments
brought about by the disaster, including diarrhea and respiratory
problems.

Similar disasters have also occurred at various places across
the country. In West Java, rains and landslides have disrupted
railway traffic between Jakarta and Bandung.

In Yogyakarta, the local administration has issued warnings to
residents along the Code River of possible floods, and for rescue
workers to be on call, Antara reported.

In North Aceh, floods that hit three subdistricts since Sunday
have now spread further, while floods in West Aceh have started
to subside. However, 672 families of West Aceh are still camping
out on higher ground.

Some of the areas stricken by floods were Lhoksukon, Tanah
Pasir and Matang Kuli subdistricts. (swe/wah)
