Floods in Sigi, Central Sulawesi Submerge 50 Hectares of Rice Fields

Floods and landslides struck Toro village in Kulawi district, Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi, submerging dozens of hectares of rice fields and cutting off road links between villages.

“Asbudianto, Head of Central Sulawesi’s Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), said on Monday (25 May) that the floods and landslides in Toro village occurred due to heavy rainfall.”

The disaster occurred on Sunday (24 May) around 5.40 pm WITA after intense rainfall hit Sigi Regency, causing floods and landslides in Toro village.

“The flooding was caused by a narrowed river channel leading to overflow that submerged rice mills and local farmland,” he explained.

Asbudianto also noted that landslides occurred in the same village during the heavy downpour.

“Landslides were also reported in the same village due to the heavy rainfall,” he added.

According to BPBD records, approximately 50 hectares of rice fields were inundated.

“The affected areas include 50 hectares of rice fields, rice mills, and inter-village roads blocked by landslide debris,” he stated.

Currently, BPBD and local authorities are conducting assessments and monitoring the conditions of affected residents.

“There are no reported injuries or fatalities. We are still tallying the number of affected residents,” he concluded.
