Floods in Riau subside

PEKANBARU, Riau: Waters 2.5 meters deep which have covered the
road to West Sumatra since Saturday have started to subside but
several villages are under threat of landslides, Antara reported
yesterday.

Yurnalis Saiby, the head of the local office of land
transportation control agency, said traffic has returned to
normal yesterday after having been cut off since Saturday.

Caused by the sudden increase in the water level of the Kampar
River, the floods hit hardest around the construction site of the
Koto Panjang hydroelectric plant in Pulau Gadang village.

Yurnalis said that although the water has started to subside,
rains are still falling and endangering the villages of Air
Tiris, Danau Bengkuang and Teratak Buluh. (swe)
