Floods in Padang City Spread to Three Sub-Districts, Says BPBD

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that joint team officers evacuated residents affected by widespread flooding in Padang City, West Sumatra, using boats.

Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information and Communication Centre, reported that the flooding occurred after high-intensity or very heavy rain battered the Padang City area from 11:00 to 17:00 WIB (Western Indonesia Time).

“The prolonged heavy rain triggered floodwaters that overflowed into residential areas and main roads at several points. In response to the situation, the joint BPBD Padang City team deployed polyethylene boats to evacuate residents to safe locations,” said Abdul Muhari in his statement on Monday, 3 August 2026.

Abdul explained that, based on data from the Padang City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the flooding currently affects three districts: Kuranji, Koto Tangah and Bungus Teluk Kabung.

In Kuranji District, the affected areas include the neighbourhoods of Lapau Munggu, the Wahana Complex, Kampuang Tanjung, Pasar Lalang and Gunung Sarik.

Meanwhile, in Koto Tangah District, floodwaters submerged the neighbourhood of Aia Pacah, the area behind the regional general hospital (RSUD) and the Green Mandiri housing estate, while in Bungus Teluk Kabung five neighbourhoods were hit.

The BNPB’s Directorate of Operations Control confirmed, according to reports from field officers, that the strength of the flood currents on the roads swept away a number of residents’ motor vehicles.

According to Abdul, as of tonight rain was still falling over parts of Padang and floodwaters at several points had shown no signs of receding, while the assessment of casualties and losses was ongoing.

“People in vulnerable areas are urged to keep monitoring official information from the regional government and the local BPBD, and to promptly follow officers’ instructions should evacuation be necessary for the sake of collective safety,” he said.

This preparedness aligns with the early warning for extreme weather previously issued by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The BMKG’s Meteorology Directorate detected the emergence of Tropical Cyclone Seed 94W in the Philippine Sea, which has the potential to trigger increased heavy rainfall in a number of areas, particularly across most of western Sumatra during the period of 3–5 August.
