Floods hit, more likely until March

JAKARTA (JP): Areas in North Jakarta and East Jakarta were inundated again yesterday following a downpour Sunday night.

The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency warned that residents should be prepared for floods until March as rain levels continue to exceed 100 millimeters.

In Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, yesterday, water rose to one meter high and to almost the same level in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, where elementary school students were taking tests at the time.

Residents in Pondok Bambu and Kramat Jati, also in East Jakarta, were trapped in their homes and cars when water levels reached 60 centimeters high.

Refuge centers were set up in schools and other locations.

The Cipinang Besar Selatan subdistrict was inundated when the Cipinang river overflowed and water reached 50 cm high in the area, according to the city's public order office. (anr)
