Floods engulf 7,000 buildings

BREBES, Central Java: A two-day heavy downpour here has caused floods which inundated around 7,000 houses, schools and other buildings on Wednesday.

Villages hardest hit by the floods were Karangmalang, Padakotan, Dukuh Tengah, Ciduet, Ketanggungan, Tegongan and Kemurang," said Brebes regent Moh. Tajudin Nuraly on Wednesday.

Thousands of hectares of fields, including onion farms, were also destroyed by the flood. The water levels reached one meter to two meters high.

No fatalities were reported in the incident. The local administration provided temporary shelters with medicine and aid.

"We will soon build a water dam to prevent further flooding. We need about Rp 50 million to build it," he added. (har/edt)
