Floods destroy N. Jakarta parks

JAKARTA (JP): Sixteen parks covering 59,400 square meters of land in North Jakarta have been destroyed by the recent floods, the head of the mayoralty park office said.

Maruli Tua Manurung said yesterday the destroyed parks had inflicted around Rp 500 million (US$217,000) in losses.

The parks are all covered with mud, the soil has become unfertile and the fences have been broken, Antara quoted Manurung as saying.

"We are now repairing the parks," he said, without revealing how much money was allocated for the project. He said the parks are always damaged by floods. (sur)
