Flooding Submerges Two Districts in Makassar, Hundreds of Residents Displaced

A total of 545 people have been displaced due to flooding that hit the Manggala and Biringkanaya districts in Makassar, South Sulawesi, after heavy rain fell throughout Tuesday (24 February).

“Yes, there are 545 people, or 169 families, who have been displaced due to the flooding,” said the Head of the Makassar Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Muhammad Fadli, on Wednesday (24 February).

The rain that hit the city of Makassar caused flooding in areas that are prone to flooding during the rainy season.

“The Manggala and Biringkanaya districts are prone to flooding when the rainy season arrives in Makassar,” he said.

So far, Fadli said that six locations have been prepared by the Makassar BPBD team as evacuation sites for residents affected by the flood.

“Currently, the team is continuing to monitor and collect data on residents affected by the flood in the two districts,” he concluded.

Hospital Patients Evacuated

In other parts of South Sulawesi, a number of patients from the Lasinrang Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Pinrang Regency were reportedly evacuated to a safe place after the hospital was flooded due to heavy rainfall.

“Yes, they were evacuated urgently by the medical staff on duty,” said Rhommy Manule to CNNIndonesia.com on Wednesday (25 February).

The flooding that hit Pinrang Regency on Tuesday (24 February) was caused by high rainfall, resulting in several roads and the Lasinrang RSUD being flooded.

“Indeed, yesterday afternoon before sunset, there was flooding on Jalan A. Pawelloi and at the Lasinrang Hospital,” he said.

However, Rhommy said that the situation is now under control, with the water having receded and the patients being in a safe place away from the floodwaters.

“Currently, the water has receded in several locations and there is no more flooding,” he concluded.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) through the Large Meteorological, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BBMKG) Region IV Makassar has issued an early warning for extreme weather in the South Sulawesi region, valid from 24 February to 1 March 2026.

“During the period of 24 February to 1 March 2026, there will be rain with intensities ranging from heavy to very heavy,” said the Acting Head of BBMKG Region IV Makassar, Nasrol Adil, in a statement on Tuesday (24 February).
