Flooding Returns to Aceh Tamiang as Residents Begin Evacuating
Heavy rain that has been falling in Aceh Tamiang Regency since Sunday (11 October) has caused several rivers to overflow and flooded residential areas.
Information from the Aceh Tamiang Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), recorded at 10am local time, showed that six districts in the regency had been inundated and residents had begun evacuating.
The six districts are Bendahara, Kejuruan Muda, Tamiang Hulu, Karang Baru, Tenggulun and Seruway. Water levels vary, reaching more than one metre in some places.
Aceh Tamiang BPBD chief Iman Suhery said preliminary data showed that 365 people had evacuated to safe locations.
“Preliminary data shows that residents have begun evacuating,” Iman said when contacted on Monday (12 October).
The agency is still gathering data as floodwaters have yet to recede in several districts. Iman urged residents to remain alert as rainfall continues to be heavy.
Flooding has also begun to affect Pidie Jaya, Bireuen, Central Aceh and Southeast Aceh, according to data collected by CNNIndonesia.com.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had previously issued an early weather warning for Indonesia for 10–12 October 2026.
In a post on its Instagram account, @infobmkg, on Saturday (10 October), BMKG placed Aceh and North Sumatra on alert for heavy to very heavy rain.
The alert applied to Aceh on 10 and 12 October, and to North Sumatra on 10, 11 and 12 October. The two provinces faced the possibility of flooding and landslides.
