Flooding in Mabar Enters Schools, Rico Waas Requests Drainage Normalisation

Mayor of Medan Rico Waas has issued firm instructions for total normalisation in Mabar Ward, Medan Deli Subdistrict, to widen channels by expanding drainage dimensions to accommodate rainwater volumes, and the use of U-Ditch systems to replace natural channels, ensuring more measured, smooth water flow and easier long-term maintenance.

The instructions were conveyed after Rico Waas’s direct inspection of several flood-prone points. Accompanied by Medan Deli Subdistrict Head M Aidiel Putra Pratama and Head of Protocol and Public Relations Arafat Syam, Rico Waas surveyed Mangaan I Street and Bahagia Street to identify the root causes.

At that time, Rico Waas found that the waterways in the area were still natural and unable to handle high water discharge, causing water to overflow onto roads, enter residents’ yards, and school areas.

“We do not want community activities, especially schoolchildren, to be disrupted just because of clogged and undersized waterways. School access must be flood-free,” Rico stated.

One critical point of primary concern is the Bahagia Private Education area, which oversees an elementary and junior high school. Rico emphasised that educational access must not be disrupted by infrastructure issues.

This strategic step is part of Medan City’s major mission to minimise flood points in dense settlements. With these improvements, it is hoped that Mabar residents will no longer be haunted by anxiety over overflowing water every time clouds gather over the Medan Deli sky.
