Flooding in Agam, West Sumatra Displaces 450 Residents, 60 Still Trapped

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Agam Regency, West Sumatra, reported that flooding which struck Nagari Sungai Batang, Tanjung Raya District, on Saturday evening resulted in 450 residents being displaced and 60 people trapped by the floodwaters. The 450 residents have taken refuge in the homes of relatives located in safe areas. Those trapped by the strong currents comprise 20 families, totalling 60 individuals. Evacuations were carried out independently by the victims, with some assisted by a joint team from BPBD Agam, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), the police, and the military. Meanwhile, in Jorong Labuah, 250 residents were displaced after 20 housing units were inundated with water up to 70 centimetres deep. The flooding in the two jorongs followed high-intensity rainfall that fell from Saturday afternoon into the evening, causing the Batang Tumayo River to overflow and submerge homes along its banks. An official noted this is a recurring flood, as the river has experienced siltation following a flash flood that hit the area in late November 2025. No fatalities have been reported, and floodwaters have begun to recede, allowing some residents to return home. Nevertheless, the public is urged to remain vigilant and evacuate immediately if heavy rainfall occurs.
