Flooding struck 14 villages across eight sub-districts in Grobogan Regency, Central Java, on Monday (16/2).

According to the Head of the Grobogan Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Wahyu Tri Darmawanto, the flooding occurred at approximately 02:00 Western Indonesian Time.

The floods inundated residential areas, local roads and main thoroughfares, with water levels varying between 15 centimetres and one metre.

“In Kedungjati Sub-district, flooding occurred in Klitikan Village with water levels of 20-30 cm. In Kedungjati Village, water approximately 20 cm deep inundated the Kedungjati-Salatiga main road, specifically near the BPR BKK Kedungjati,” he said.

Wahyu reported that in Wates Village, the Tuntang River overflowed and submerged residential areas to a depth of 20-30 cm. However, floodwaters have since been gradually receding.

In Tegowanu Sub-district, flooding inundated Tajemsari and Sukorejo villages with water levels of 20-30 cm, which have now begun to subside.

Gubug Sub-district was also affected, specifically Penadaran Village covering the hamlets of Sasak, Tegalrejo and Bantengan. “Water levels in this area reached 30-50 cm and are gradually receding,” he added.

In Purwodadi Sub-district, South Jagalan neighbourhood in Purwodadi sub-district was submerged to a depth of 15-20 cm. Meanwhile, at Permata Hijau housing estate in Kalongan sub-district, water reached approximately one metre and the evacuation of residents was still underway.

“Flooding also struck Karangrayung Sub-district. In Karangsono Village, water inundated residential areas. In Mojoagung Village, four hamlets were affected — Krasak, Mojo, Klampisan, and the area surrounding the Jajar River after several embankments collapsed and overflowed,” he explained.

Heavy rainfall that pounded Mojoagung Village from 19:30 to 03:00 caused the Jajar River embankment to breach at several points.

Mojoagung Village Head Siswanto reported that the embankment in Krasak hamlet was breached over a length of approximately 15 metres. In the Klampisan area, two breach points were identified, each approximately 15 metres long, whilst several other points were reported to have overflowed due to the high volume of water.

“As a result, dozens of homes were inundated. In Krasak hamlet, flooding covered RW 07 RT 1, 2, 4 and 5 as well as RW 06 RT 1, 2 and 3. In Bungkel hamlet, flooding occurred in RW 05 RT 3, 4 and 6. Water levels in the Krasak area ranged between 20-40 cm,” he said.

In addition to residential areas, the flooding also submerged rice paddy fields. In front of the petrol station in the Mojo hamlet area, water levels reached approximately one metre, rendering the road impassable to vehicles.

In Geyer Sub-district, flooding occurred in Bangsri Village, specifically in the Getas and Geneng hamlets. Three houses were reported submerged with water levels of approximately 25 cm. In Toroh Sub-district, flooding struck Tambirejo and Krangganharjo villages. Evacuations were carried out at Janur Kuning housing estate in Tambirejo Village.

Meanwhile, in Pulokulon Sub-district, flooding caused by the overflow of the Peganjing River submerged Legundi hamlet in Karangharjo Village, with water levels of approximately 50 cm. Some 30 residents were reported to have self-evacuated.

As of the time of reporting, the majority of affected areas were gradually seeing floodwaters recede. Nevertheless, residents were urged to remain vigilant against the possibility of further rainfall that could trigger renewed flooding.
