Flooding delays employees' paydays

SORONG, Irian Jaya: Heavy flooding, affecting three of the
regency's subdistricts, has badly disrupted land transportation
in the rural areas.

Many civil servants in the subdistricts of Ayamaru, Aifat and
Aitinyo have been unable to have their rice and pay transferred
over the past three months because the only roads are cut off.

The floods have also caused prices to soar. For example, the
price of salt has tripled to Rp 2,000 (93 U.S. cents), Antara
reported.

In Aifat, shops are running out of supplies and there are
growing fears of a crisis happening, the report said.

A public works official admitted that the only road connecting
Aifat and Sorong was cut off due to shoddy construction. (pan)
