Flood victims in Nagan Raya endure Ramadan without electricity
Nagan Raya (ANTARA) - The community of flood victims in Beutong Ateuh Banggalang District, Nagan Raya Regency, Aceh Province, has yet to enjoy electric lighting since the area was hit by floods at the end of November 2025.
“Not only after the flood, entering the 17th day of the holy month of Ramadan, we, together with the community, eat sahur and break fast in darkness. Only minimal lighting is available,” said Samsuardi, a resident of Beutong Ateuh Banggalang, Nagan Raya, Aceh to ANTARA on Friday night.
He said that until now, hundreds of residents of Beutong Ateuh Banggalang, Nagan Raya who are evacuating in emergency tents are forced to break fast and sahur using candles and traditional lighting or lampu panyet (a lamp lit by flame).
Samsuardi stated that lighting is a very important facility in the holy month of Ramadan, especially during iftar and sahur. In fact, lighting is greatly needed by communities to carry out worship with devotion.
“Imagine how the fate of the people breaking fast and having sahur in total darkness in refugee tents would be like, especially those living far from their neighbours,” he added.
He said that it has been almost four months since the flash floods struck Beutong Ateuh Nagan Raya, yet many people still live in tents in a state without electricity.
Therefore, he hopes the central and regional governments will immediately address this issue, so disaster victims are not continually shrouded in darkness without electricity, including during the holy month of Ramadan.
