Sekolah Dasar Negeri (SDN) 5 Banjar was amongst those affected by the flash flood that struck Banjar Village, Banjar District, Buleleng, Bali. A number of school facilities and library book collections were filled with silt.

Hundreds of books were even dried and stacked in the school yard on Sunday (8 March). The books, which had previously been stored in the library, were flooded when water surge entered the school area.

In addition, several student desks and chairs were also submerged in muddy water. Several classrooms in the school remain filled with fairly thick mud deposits.

The Secretary of the Department of Education, Youth and Sports (Disdikpora) Buleleng, Luh Putu Adi Ariwati, stated that her office had directly checked the condition of SDN 5 Banjar. According to her, Disdikpora Buleleng also mapped the damage to school facilities and infrastructure.

“We conducted this visit to map the damage to school facilities and infrastructure following the flash flood, whilst also being a step towards accelerating recovery,” said Ariwati on Monday (9 March 2026).

The flash flood struck Banjar Village on Friday (6 March) evening. River overflow caused water levels that submerged the school building to reach 2.5 metres, or the level of the windows. After the water receded, the school yard and several rooms were filled with mud deposits approximately 0.5 metres thick.

Not only the building, but several school assets were also reported to have suffered damage. This included approximately 50 student desks, 100 student chairs, four cabinets, four bookshelves, and seven reading tables.

In addition, one computer unit was also reported to have been submerged. Similarly, an Interactive Flat Panel (IFP) that was partially submerged is currently undergoing inspection to ascertain the extent of damage.

“We are currently coordinating intensively with the Buleleng Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and local village government for the mud cleaning process,” said Ariwati.

Ariwati hopes that this cross-sector collaboration can accelerate the recovery process of SDN 5 Banjar. This way, she said, students can soon resume their teaching and learning process comfortably.

“Our primary focus is to ensure that the school environment returns to being clean and safe so that teaching and learning activities are not disrupted for too long,” she concluded.

It is known that the flash flood that struck Banjar Village resulted in four residents being swept away by the current on Friday (6 March). Three people have been found dead and one person remains missing.

The three deceased victims consist of Ketut Adi Suarjana (55), Komang Suci (44) along with her child Kadek Wahyu (12). Meanwhile, one missing victim is Putu Wini (17), who is also a child of Komang Suci.
