Flood kills nine in Serui

MANOKWARI, Irian Jaya: Nine people were killed and dozens of
houses were badly damaged by a flood which hit the city of Serui
in Irian Jaya last Friday.

Chief of Yapen Waropen military subdistrict Lt. Col. Eski
Hermawan said yesterday that several bridges, churches and roads
were also ruined by the flood, which occurred along with strong
winds and a heavy downpour.

Several office buildings and housing complexes were also
inundated, he was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.

He attributed the flooding to incessant rain during the past
week.

According to Eski, authorities will coordinate relief aid and
work with residents to rebuild their houses in safer areas. (rms)
