In anticipation of floods in Jakarta as the rainy season is
approaching, the Jakarta regional administration should actively
take specific flood measures, particularly by clearing open
drains as well as river, lake and pool dredging.

The cleaning and dredging are needed to increase the capacity
of the drainage channels when the wet season arrives.

Many rivers in Jakarta, large and small, are dirty and in a
poor condition, and are getting shallower due to the accumulation
of waste. When rainfall is high, these streams will definitely
overflow and flooding is inevitable.

The cost of dredging may be big, but the loss incurred due to
a flood disaster is even greater. Therefore, cleaning and
dredging work is imperative.

I agree with the Jakarta administration's move to ban the
construction of buildings along river plains, because such
settlements have not only created an ugly sight but also
increased the possibility of floods through improper waste
disposal.
