Flood-affected residents build place of worship from swept-away logs
East Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) — Residents of Sahraja Village in East Aceh, affected by flash floods in November 2025, are building a place of worship using logs swept away by floodwaters.
“We plan to build the prayer house from leftover timber,” said Rudi Jasa, a Sahraja Village resident encountered in Sarah Gala Hamlet, Sahraja Village, East Aceh, Aceh, on Sunday.
Although the community plans to construct the prayer house from logs carried by the November 2025 floods, Rudi said they still require government assistance.
Residents need fuel to cut the logs that will be used to build the musala (small mosque).
The amount of timber he has collected so far is estimated at around one tonne, whereas he needs five to six tonnes to complete the musala.
“This musala construction is in preparation for tarawih prayers and Eid al-Fitr. But for now, we are still in emergency tents,” Rudi said.
Rudi expressed his gratitude to volunteers and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), which provided assistance including tents for worship, loudspeakers and other worship equipment.
With this aid, Sahraja Village — which had been unable to conduct worship services after the floods destroyed its religious facilities — can now hold prayers during the holy month of Ramadan.
“After the flood, everything was completely gone. Only traces remain. So when it comes to longing for a place of worship, we certainly miss it,” Rudi said.
Sahraja Village in East Aceh was one of the worst-affected villages following the flash floods that struck Aceh in November 2025.
A total of 243 households in the village, which borders North Aceh Regency and Bener Meriah Regency, lost their homes, public facilities and farmland.
