Flights in Indonesia Still Frequently Delayed, AHY Speaks Out
Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) has highlighted the persistently high level of public attention on the on-time performance (OTP) of flights. According to him, improving service quality is one of the government’s focuses in strengthening national connectivity. AHY stated that reinforcing the airport ecosystem is part of the government’s strategy to drive the economy, including supporting the tourism and creative economy sectors in various regions. “We start with why this issue is important. Because one of our efforts to drive the economy nationally and in various regions is through strengthening the governance of the airport ecosystem as a mode of transportation expected to increase mobility, or the transport of people, goods, and services,” AHY said during a ministerial-level coordination meeting at his office in Jakarta on Thursday (25/6/2026). He explained that based on the 2025-2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), one of the government’s focuses is building an integrated airport network to support connectivity and economic growth. One of the indicators of concern is flight punctuality. “If we look at it, there are several targets, certainly among them related to aviation, talking about our flight on-time performance,” he said. According to AHY, flight delays remain the most frequently voiced public complaint. Therefore, service quality must continue to be improved, including when operational disruptions occur. “This is always a concern for the wider community, when there are excessively long delays or a lack of clarity regarding factors such as weather or other technical matters,” he stated. “So we must improve this service related to on-time performance,” he stressed. AHY added that strengthening aviation services is part of efforts to enhance the competitiveness of the national airport sector. The government is targeting the airport ecosystem to become a lever for economic growth, while simultaneously improving the quality of service to the public. “Clearly, after that we strive to improve competitiveness. Once again, competitiveness is a measure of the achievement of airport service quality. And finally, to ensure that the airport sector truly becomes a lever for our national connectivity. Economic growth, equitable distribution, hopefully can be created and follow,” he concluded.
