Flight operations between Soekarno-Hatta and Kualanamu disrupted by Mount Sinabung eruption
Tangerang (ANTARA) - PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia (Persero), also known as InJourney Airports, has stated that flight operations on the route from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Soetta), Banten, to Kuallagnamu International Airport, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, have been disrupted due to the eruption of Mount Sinabung, which has been ongoing since Monday (31/8).
Assistant Deputy of Communication & Legal at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Yudistiawan, in a written statement received in Tangerang on Wednesday, stated that the authorities are continuously coordinating with airlines and relevant stakeholders to monitor flight conditions and anticipate any further impacts.
Currently, Kualanamu Airport is experiencing operational closures due to the activity of Mount Sinabung. This situation has the potential to cause delays, cancellations, and flight diversions for all flights travelling to and from Kualanamu.
“The impact of the Mount Sinabung eruption has affected flights to and from Kualanamu, including routes from Soekarno-Hatta Airport. We are continuing to coordinate with airlines and relevant stakeholders to ensure that flight conditions and passenger services remain monitored,” he explained.
He revealed that on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, flight traffic between Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Kualanamu Airport and vice versa recorded 41 flight movements, consisting of 20 arrivals and 21 departures, with an estimated 5,350 passengers.
In line with these conditions, 15 flights from Soekarno-Hatta Airport to Kualanamu, and vice versa, were cancelled due to the force majeure of Mount Sinabung’s volcanic activity.
“Additionally, 14 flights experienced delays. Regarding the current situation, we, along with airlines and relevant stakeholders, continue to monitor the developments of Mount Sinabung’s activity and its impact on flight operations,” he said.
“Coordination and anticipatory measures are being continuously implemented to ensure that operations and passenger services continue as smoothly as possible,” he added.
The authorities urge prospective passengers travelling to or from Kualanamu to pay close attention to the latest information from their respective airlines regarding flight status and schedules.
“We advise passengers to continue monitoring flight information through their respective airlines. We will continue to provide service and take anticipatory steps in accordance with the developing situation,” he said.
