Flash floods sweep away cars as egg seller dies after being crushed beneath a vehicle

Heavy rains on Friday night triggered flash floods in Nairobi, submerging major roads and hindering passage, with rescue teams working overnight. Grogan, a Nairobi district known for its auto workshops and used spare parts, was affected. Main roads, including Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, Kirinyaga Road, and parts of the Westlands district, were flooded, with stalled vehicles and raging floodwaters causing chaos. Authorities urged residents to avoid flooded roads and drainage channels while emergency workers assisted motorists and pedestrians stranded. During joint operations, the Kenya Red Cross recovered the body of a local egg seller trapped under a vehicle overturned by the floods. The Kenya Meteorology Department had earlier warned of prolonged heavy rainfall, urban flooding, reduced visibility and rising river levels up to 9 March. Nairobi, along with areas such as the Central Highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, and coastal regions, remained on high alert for peak rainfall in the coming days.
