Flash Floods Strike Upper Semarang, Two-Metre Waters Submerge Four Housing Estates
Heavy rainfall that lashed Semarang from Sunday evening through the early hours of Monday, 16 February 2026, triggered flash floods in the Upper Semarang area. Four housing estates in Tembalang sub-district and its surroundings were severely affected, with water levels reportedly reaching two metres at their peak.
The flooding was caused by moderate to high-intensity rainfall that caused the Pengkol River, a tributary of the Babon River, to overflow. An embankment unable to withstand the water volume eventually collapsed, sending floodwaters surging into residential areas.
The latest data from the Operations Control Centre of Semarang's Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) recorded four significantly affected locations. At the Dinar Mas housing estate in Meteseh sub-village, water overflowed once again, inundating residents' homes. Floodwaters there reached two metres above floor level. Officials are still collecting data on the number of affected households in Dinar Mas. A number of residents were forced to evacuate to a mosque situated on higher ground within the estate to escape the rising waters.
Meanwhile, at Argo Residence in Rowosari sub-village, flooding submerged neighbourhood units RT 7 and RT 8 of RW 7. Some 50 households, comprising approximately 160 people, were affected. A similar situation occurred at Grand Batik Rowosari, where 13 households totalling 33 people reported water entering their homes.
The location with the highest number of affected residents was Grand Permata Tembalang. Flooding struck RT 8 and RT 9 of RW 3, directly affecting 110 households or 313 people. Owing to the depth of the inundation, 18 residents of Grand Permata Tembalang — 12 adults and 6 young children — were forced to evacuate to the Iktifal Al Barokah Mosque.
Since the early hours, BPBD Semarang teams have been deployed to the affected locations to carry out emergency measures, ranging from evacuations to water level monitoring.
"The measures taken include assessments to record losses and residents' needs, evacuation of trapped residents — particularly vulnerable groups — as well as routine monitoring of water levels in areas still inundated," said Semarang BPBD chief Endro Pudyo Martanto on Monday, 16 February 2026.
Endro confirmed that officers remain on standby in the field, particularly at high-risk points such as Dinar Mas. Weather monitoring is also being conducted in real time to anticipate the possibility of further rainfall.
As of the time of reporting, affected residents are in urgent need of logistical assistance, clean water supplies, and equipment to clean their homes in the aftermath of the flooding in order to prevent the outbreak of disease.
