Flames reignite at Cengkareng plastic warehouse on eighth day
A fire at a plastic warehouse on Jalan Peternakan Raya in Kapuk Village, Cengkareng, West Jakarta, reignited during the eighth day of firefighting efforts early Monday. ‘It reignited (early Monday). It is now extinguished but still smoking,’ said Syaiful Kahfi, Head of the Operational Section for the West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department (Gulkarmat), when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta on Monday. He stated that the piles of plastic and other flammable materials at the site posed challenges during firefighting, meaning the fire could reignite. ‘There are still many burning material piles, so it’s still emitting smoke as the fire continues beneath the debris,’ Syaiful said. An excavator is still being used to dismantle the piles so that water can reach trapped embers. ‘Once the excavator works, we spray the base. The fire isn’t spreading to other buildings, just confined to the site,’ Syaiful added. ‘Four fire trucks, two quick response vehicles, and around 30 personnel,’ Syaiful said. The fire initially broke out at a plastic warehouse on Jalan Peternakan Raya, Gang Semut, RT06/RW04, Kapuk, Cengkareng, West Jakarta, on May 18, 2026. According to witness Yanto, the fire started inside the warehouse during a shift change. A video obtained by ANTARA showed flames growing and consuming the warehouse interior. Plastic materials inside the factory also burned, while thick black smoke billowed into the air, causing panic among nearby residents.
