Fixed! JLFR Cyclists No Longer Banned from Passing Through Malioboro

Restrictions on the Jogja Last Friday Ride (JLFR) mass cycling event, held on the last Friday of each month, have been officially lifted. Cyclists are once again permitted to pass through Malioboro and other areas in the city of Yogyakarta without blockades.

The Head of the Yogyakarta Special Region Transportation Agency, Chrestina Erni Widyastuti, confirmed that her agency and the Yogyakarta City Government agreed not to ban JLFR from Malioboro. She stated that all road users have equal rights to utilise the iconic street.

This clarification came after controversy surrounding the restriction of cyclists during JLFR on certain routes, including Malioboro, on Friday (26/7). The previous restriction was implemented to maintain smooth traffic flow and order during the school holiday period.

Yogyakarta Mayor Hasto Wardoyo stated that the city government will not impose excessive security measures for the next JLFR event on 31 July. Instead of strict security, the city government will adopt a ‘companion’ approach, accompanying the cyclists. ‘I think all routes can be used, and Malioboro is open. The point is, it is open,’ Hasto emphasised.
