Pomegranates are widely recognised as fruits with bright red seeds rich in nutrients and possessing relatively long storage capability. These factors make pomegranates an increasingly sought-after horticultural commodity in global markets, particularly across the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

India is recorded as the world’s largest pomegranate exporting country. The nation ships more than 90,000 tonnes of pomegranate fruit to global markets annually, driven by high fruit quality and continuously increasing international demand.

India Dominates Global Market

India has become the largest pomegranate exporter owing to its substantial domestic production. The country produces more than 2.8 million tonnes of pomegranate annually and serves as the primary supplier in the international fruit trade.

From an export perspective, India typically ships approximately 90,000 to 100,000 tonnes of pomegranate every year to various countries. Principal markets include the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Netherlands, and Saudi Arabia.

The value of India’s pomegranate exports continues to increase. In the 2023/2024 fiscal year, exports of this fruit reached approximately $69 million with a volume of around 72,000 tonnes. Rising global demand is expected to drive continued growth in exports over the coming years.

Pomegranate Production Centres in India

The majority of India’s pomegranate production originates from Maharashtra state. This region contributes more than 70 per cent of national production and is recognised as the country’s principal pomegranate cultivation centre.

The semi-arid climatic conditions in the region, characterised by high temperatures and low rainfall, are considered highly suitable for producing high-quality pomegranates with bright colour and sweet flavour.

Beyond Maharashtra, other regions such as Gujarat and Karnataka also serve as important pomegranate-producing areas in India.

Global Demand Continues to Rise

Globally, pomegranates are becoming increasingly popular owing to their nutritional content and their use in various food and beverage products, ranging from fresh consumption to juices and extracts.

This fruit also boasts a long history in trade and distribution from the Iran and Western Asia region to various parts of the world dating back thousands of years.

With rising international demand, India is expected to maintain its position as a leading player in global pomegranate exports in the coming years.
