Five Swedes questioned

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: The Swedish embassy in Jakarta has appealed to the police in Irian Jaya to speed up the investigation of five Swedes accused of illegally catching butterflies in the province.

Antara news agency reported that the embassy's charge d'affaires, H. Jansens made the appeal because the five are fast running out of funds due to the prolonged investigation.

The five Swedes under investigation are K.K Anderson, 30, H.Tjarner, 27, H.S Yanson, 30, C.G Osborg, 28, and Y.Scostedt, 32.

Police said the five violated the 1990 law banning any hunting of protected species, and also violated immigration regulations because they were in the country as tourists.

Police have seized 757 species of butterflies from the five as evidence. (emb)
