Five SPPI Participants Die During Basic Military Training

The number of deceased participants in the Sarjana Penggerak Pembangunan Indonesia (SPPI) programme, part of the Koperasi Desa Merah Putih (KDMP) and Koperasi Nelayan Merah Putih (KNMP) initiatives, has risen to five. The Ministry of Defence conveyed its condolences over the incidents. Head of the Ministry’s Human Resources Development Agency, Major General Ketut Gede Wetan, confirmed that all participants received medical treatment in accordance with procedures. “First of all, on behalf of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Indonesia, the national selection committee, and all organisers of the SPPI programme, we express our deepest condolences on the passing of five participants of the 2026 SPPI KDKN MP programme who were undergoing state defence and managerial training,” Major General Ketut Gede stated during a press conference on Saturday. He noted that the five participants had different characteristics and medical conditions. The deceased participants were identified as Yonanda Muhammad Taufiq, Anisa Muyassaroh, Novia Rahmadhani Sihotang, Muhammad Rifki Renaldi Gunawan, and Nola Dya Sari. Major General Ketut Gede explained that all participants had undergone comprehensive health checks, including blood and urine laboratory tests, pregnancy tests, chest X-rays, electrocardiograms, abdominal ultrasounds, and eye, dental, posture, and mental health examinations. He then detailed the chronology of each death. Yonanda Muhammad Taufiq was training at the Pusdiklatpur Kodiklatad in Baturaja. On 17 June 2026, during an environmental familiarisation activity, he lost consciousness. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at 6.33 p.m. WIB due to cardiac arrest. Anisa Muyassaroh, training at Dodik Kejuruan Rindam VI/Mulawarman in Balikpapan, complained of shortness of breath and nausea before a scheduled lesson on 18 June 2026. She was evacuated and later referred to a hospital, where she died at 7 p.m. WITA. The medical cause of death was determined to be heat stroke. Novia Rahmadhani Sihotang, from the Pusbahasa Kodiklau training unit, sought medical help on 22 June 2026 for a cough, shortness of breath, and fever. Her condition deteriorated, and after being referred to a hospital, an active pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosis was made. She died on 23 June 2026. Muhammad Rifki Renaldi Gunawan, training at Yon Parako 465 Halim Perdanakusuma, reported shortness of breath and weakness on 25 June 2026. After initially stabilising, his condition worsened, and he was referred to a hospital, where he died early on 26 June 2026. The cause of death was related to pneumonia with complications, with a medical history noting hypertension and obesity. Nola Dya Sari, training at Dodik Bela Negara in Kalimantan, attended lessons without complaint on 26 June 2026 before suddenly experiencing shortness of breath and a high temperature in the evening. She was treated at a local health facility and referred to a hospital in Singkawang before being transferred to RSUD Abdul Aziz.
