Five People Questioned in Connection with Firecracker Explosion in Sanden, Bantul
Police are questioning five witnesses in connection with a firecracker explosion in Ngunan Unan, Srigading, Sanden, Bantul. Meanwhile, the two victims with burns have not yet been able to provide statements as they are still undergoing intensive care in hospital.
“Following the firecracker explosion in Ngunan Unan, investigators have questioned five witnesses,” said the Head of Public Relations at the Bantul Police, Iptu Rita Hidayanto, when contacted by reporters on Monday (23/2/2026).
The five witnesses, Rita continued, consist of a resident whose house is near the scene of the incident. The other four are friends of the two victims who were at the scene when the explosion occurred.
“The examination is to find out where FZA obtained the firecracker materials,” she said.
Rita revealed that the two victims of the firecracker explosion, AAN (18) and FZA (19), have not yet been able to provide statements because they are still being treated at the Dr. Sardjito Central General Hospital.
“Victim FZA has not been able to provide a statement because he is still in hospital,” she said.
Previously reported, two teenagers were injured after being hit by a firecracker explosion in Ngunan Unan, Srigading, Sanden, Bantul. The two teenagers were assembling firecrackers on the terrace of a house, but because one of the firecrackers was not tied properly, it exploded.
The Head of Public Relations at the Bantul Police, Iptu Rita Hidayanto, said that the incident began when one of the victims, AAN (18), gathered with four of his friends at his house at around 05:00 WIB. Then, FZA (19), a resident of Gadingsari, Srigading, Sanden, Bantul, came to AAN’s house.
“When he arrived at AAN’s house, FZA took out four ounces of firecracker powder and a transparent plastic bag,” she said to reporters in Bantul, Sunday (22/2).
Furthermore, FZA then invited his friends to make firecrackers. However, only AAN agreed to FZA’s invitation to make firecrackers.
“Then the two victims made firecrackers on the terrace of the house to the south, next to a chair. The other four people just sat on the chairs to the east of the victims,” she said.
The two victims made firecrackers by putting firecracker powder into the plastic bag. Then the plastic bag was filled with gravel and tied with transparent tape.
“After it was finished, one firecracker was placed near the two victims,” she said.
Then, the two victims continued to make the second firecracker in the same way. However, the second firecracker turned out not to be tied with tape properly.
“The second firecracker had not been tied yet and suddenly a loud explosion was heard, causing the roof, window glass and the floor where the explosion occurred to crack,” she said.
