Five People Killed in Terror Attack on California Mosque, Including Two Teenage Suspects
SAN DIEGO, California — San Diego Police on Monday, 19 May 2026, announced that five people were killed in an attack targeting an Islamic centre in the city, including two perpetrators who were described as still teenagers.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, with the preliminary assessment that it was a hate crime.
United States President Donald Trump expressed his condolences, describing the shooting at the mosque as horrific.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said one of the deceased was a security officer working at the mosque.
He explained that the two teenage attackers killed three people before ultimately taking their own lives, and that their bodies were found inside a vehicle.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria revealed that the Islamic Center in the Clairemont area — which houses the city’s largest mosque — was targeted in the shooting.
In a post on the X platform, Todd Gloria said he continued to receive updates from law enforcement regarding the incident.
He added that emergency teams were on scene and actively working to protect residents and secure the surrounding area.
