Five people injured in toll road collisions

JAKARTA (JP): Seven collisions involving at least 14 cars occurred on Jagorawi toll road yesterday, injuring four men and a woman.

Muhamad Abri, an officer of the state-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga, said all seven collisions happened between kilometer 17 and kilometer 23 of the toll road at about 3 p.m.

"The rain and darkness probably caused the collisions. Motorists could only see about 10 meters to 20 meters in front," Muhamad said.

Muhamad said the owners of the cars involved had all agreed to settle out of the court as the collisions were caused by natural conditions.

He said one of the collisions occurred when a Metromini bus hit a Kijang van at the kilometer 17 mark of the toll road.

He said the bus driver, Maringan Manurung, 38, suffered severe injuries while two bus passengers, Junaidi, 30, and Abung, 32, and two Kijang van passengers, Farid, 26, and Erina, 20, suffered only minor injuries.

The five people were rushed to Christian University Hospital, in East Jakarta, he said.

Mujiono, an officer at the Hospital's emergency unit said that Maringan, a resident of Jl. Rawamangun, in Pulo Gadung, East Jakarta was treated for head injuries, a suspected broken leg and scrapes and burns.

"Maringan needs an operation on his left leg," Mujiono said.

He said the other four were allowed to go home after being treated.

Junaidi and Abung were residents of Jl. Manggis, in Mangga Besar, Central Jakarta, he said.

He said Farid was a resident of Cililitan area, in East Jakarta while Erina was resident of Jl. Pondok Gede, in Bekasi.

The Jagorawi accidents occured only a day after eight were killed in an accident on the Cikampek turnpike.

Thirty-one people were killed in an accident when a Kramatdjati bus caught fire after colliding with a jeep that was parked on the side of the Jagorawi toll road on March 23, last year.

All 29 passengers were killed instantly, as were the two people whose car was parked on the side of the road. Dozens were injured. (jun)
