Five old trees fall in heavy rain

BOGOR: Heavy rain on Thursday evening caused five 40-year-old to 50-year-old trees to fall down across Bogor city roads.

Head of Bogor Park Agencies, Lilies Sukartini, said on Friday that the trees that had fallen on Jl. Martadinata were a cajuput tree and a flamboyant tree. Two more flamboyant trees fell down on Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan and Jl. Salak respectively, while a canary tree fell down on Jl. Semeru.

The 50-year-old cajuput tree, which was 15-meters-tall, fell on a car parked on the roadside. But no other damage was reported.

There are around 9,000 trees in Bogor city but so far the condition of only 6,700 trees has been assessed. Three percent of the 6,700 trees need to be replaced due to their age and their poor health.

"The agency has cut down several trees which were too old and a danger to passersby. But we have also supported some trees with cement or iron poles," Lilies said.

"We also ask the Bogor Institute of Agriculture to examine old trees to establish whether they are diseased," she added. -- JP
