Five new records broken in junior athletics c'ship

JAKARTA (JP): Five new meet records were produced during the first two days of the 5th Asian junior track and field championships.

One of the new marks came yesterday in the women's 100m by Damayanthi Dasha of Sri Lanka. The other four were produced on Saturday were in the men's javelin by China's Wang Yichun, in the men's 110m hurdles by Mubarok Khasif, in the men's 3,000 steeplechase by Japan's Ojima Tadayuki and in the women's 5,000m by Skashita Naomi, also of Japan.

The old mark of 11.78 seconds in the women's 100m set by Xiao Yehua of China in 1990 was surpassed by four runners and tied by one.

Damayanthi Dhasha ran 11.42 seconds for the new mark. She edged her compatriot Susanthika Jayasinghe, who took the silver in 11.49 secs.

China's Gao, who took the bronze, and her compatriot Wang Jing also shattered the old mark by clocking 11.54 sec and 11.71 sec, respectively.

Damayanthi's coach, Sunil Gunawardena, said the times were career bests for the two sprinters. Sunil said his country is counting on them in the 200m, 100m and 4x100m relay at the upcoming Asian Games in Hiroshima.

Damayanthi was sent to the United States for relaxation and training after suffering an injury last month, Sunil said, or else she may have managed an 11.02 sec or 11.03 secs.

Thailand's assistant team manager, Surapong, said that Worasit Vechaput and Sayan Namwong, who took the gold and silver in the men's 100m, would also take part in the men's 4X100m relay scheduled for today.

Surapong believed Thailand would win the relay competition because Kongdech Netnee and Reanchai Seehawong, who will fill out the team, are equal in their strength to the two in speed.

In the men's long jump, Qatari supporters erupted in joy after watching China's Chen Jing fail his final jump, which gave the Qatari athlete the gold. Rahman Al-Nobi jumped 7.97m in his fourth attempt, 20 cm farther than the best effort of Chen. (arf)
