Five months jail for burglars

JAKARTA (JP): The West Jakarta District Court yesterday sentenced two men to five months imprisonment after finding them guilty of stealing electronic goods.

Surya and Nurdin stole the goods from the house of Robby on Jl. Jelambar, West Jakarta, on Nov. 13 last year, the judge said. Included among the stolen goods were a television set and a fax machine.

They broke into the house in the early hours of Nov. 13, according to witnesses.

One of the witnesses, Udin, who is Robby's domestic helper, told the judge he saw two men breaking into the house, but he did not have the courage to foil the theft because he was all alone.

"I saw the burglars help themselves to a television set and some other goods. They took the goods to a waiting car parked in front of the house," Udin said."I was too frightened to act.I did not even dare to shout because I feared that the robbers would find me."

He said he and his employer's driver, Endang, later reported the theft to a nearby police precinct, who acted swiftly and apprehended the two culprits the following day just as they were about to rob another house, also located on Jl. Jelambar. (14/bas)
