JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Religion (Kemenag) will conduct new moon observations at five locations in the Jakarta Special Region (DKI Jakarta) as part of the series of determination meetings for Eid al-Adha 2026.
The determination meeting for the beginning of Dzulhijjah 1447 Hijri will be held on May 17, 2026, at the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium, Ministry of Religion RI, Central Jakarta.
The Director of Islamic Affairs and Sharia Guidance at Kemenag, Arsad Hidayat, said that the determination meeting involves various elements, starting from BMKG, BRIN, the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Islamic mass organisations, to astronomy experts and academics.
Based on hisab calculations, the conjunction will occur on May 17, 2026, at around 03.00.55 WIB. During the rukyat observation, the position of the new moon is estimated to be above the horizon with a height between 3 degrees 37 minutes and 6 degrees 54 minutes.
To ensure the results of the observations, the rukyatul hilal will be carried out at 88 locations throughout Indonesia, from Aceh to West Papua, including observatories, beaches, rooftops of buildings, and mosques.
In DKI Jakarta, there are five new moon observation points.
Arsad said that expanding the observation points is done to make the results of the rukyat more accurate and can be a basis for determination in the determination meeting.
βThe new moon observation is carried out widely in various regions of Indonesia so that the results obtained are even more accurate and can be a basis for decision-making in the determination meeting,β he said.
