BANDUNG (JP): Five paintings by local artists, which have been
selected for an international competition in London in May, are
on display at the Galeri Hidayat in Bandung until Saturday.

The paintings, with the theme My Country in the Year 2000, are
exhibited along with the works of 40 finalists of the competition
sponsored by paint company Winsor & Newton.

The five works are Rak Otak, Pikiran Manusia Pasca Millennium
2000 (Brain Shelves, Post-Millenium Human Mind) by Irman A.
Rahman (Bandung), No U-turn by Astari Rasjid (Jakarta), Star Wars
are Still Raging by Yudhis C. Hendrianto (Jakarta), Lull after
Storm II by I Nyoman Kardana (Bali) and Kentut Kesembuhan
(Healing Fart) by Moh. Azhar Shodiq (Yogyakarta).

About 70 artists from throughout the country took part in the
competition.

"There are many unknown painters among the participants, but
their works show strength," said Jim Supangkat, chairman of the
panel of judges.

"A similarity among the works with Indonesian fine art of the
1990s is the tendency to use popular symbols for expression," he
said, explaining that most of the works focus on the current
social condition.
