Five killed in van-truck crash

JAKARTA: Five elderly people were killed after the Kijang van they were riding in was hit by a large truck in a traffic accident in the village of Ilir, Kandanghaur, in Indramayu, Cirebon, early on Wednesday morning.

The five fatalities included the van driver, while two other passengers who were critically injured were rushed to Indramayu Hospital.

Those who died instantly were identified as Noto Dihardjo, 70, and his wife, Walida, 65, and the driver, Ahmad Irpan, 27, while the remaining victims who died on the way to Indramayu Hospital were identified as Muji Wahyuni, 50, and Muji Lestari, 53.

According to witnesses, Ahmad Irpan had been driving the van from Palembang, South Sumatra, back home to Yogyakarta, when he tried to overtake a car ahead of him.

At the same time the truck came from the opposite direction and the van was immediately hit by it. --Antara
